When it came to editing, because there were not as many shots as we would have liked due to the sudden change in location, we decided to cut the same shots together to give a jumps video fitting in with the styke of the music. doing this allowed hsots to be repeated in different sections because only small parts of each shot were being used.

Designing Our DigiPack
The music genre that we are working with it Club/Electro
We have to remember that we are designing an ALBUM not just a Single so can not base our artwork on this one song.
So far we have chosen a rough colour scheme, Neon, club colours (blue, red, green) against a black or dark blue background.
Although we will start with a photo that we take, the image is going to graphic.
Between the colours and graphics we will show that our band's genre is club inspired (neon colours, like the lasers in a club) electronic because of the computer generated images with under-tones of darkness with the black background.
People react to images subconsciously due to 'social priming'.
For example, putting black into the cover doesn't necessarily mean that the music will be dark, but people have learnt that Gothic culture mix black with other colours, like the Cradle Of Filth album where Black and Green is mixed.
Similarly, if we used a pink and white colour scheme it would be assumed that the music is feminine, light-hearted and mellow.

DigiPacks
When designing a digipack, the first thing that we need to do is establish what audience we are marketing to.
For Example - Ed Sheeran's music is predominantly acoustic and 'mellow' with a touch of indie-culture so his album cover is black and white, rather than electric bold colours which would suggest something more club or electro orientated. The focus of his cover is him but with his back turned so we know the music is going to be about emotion but not necessarily about him. With this cover we can expect something relaxing and simplistic rather than messy and loud.

Now we have the highly contrasting cover of Cradle Of Filth, a metal group. Titled 'Thornography' images of a totrured Chritst (the crown of thorns) and self indulgent sexuality come to mind. This colour of this album coveys a cold, gothic, unhealthy feel. The crucifixes and position of the man and woman depicts an anti-christian, debauched, demonic atmosphere. Therefore we can expect that the music will convey the same sort of feeling. The song name also reflect the intentions of the musics with titles such as:
Temptation
Tonight in flames
Cemetry and Sundown

The Shoot Day
As Holly was mainly shot on a rope swing we had to think of some way to 'cheat' is otherwise she would be very uncomfortable. For the close ups of her face or mid close of her face and body, she was actually standing on a ladder, (Photo 4), about five or six feet off the ground, this way it was more comfortable for her and easier for us to film as she didnt move around so much. At the start of the shoot day, it was hard for Holly to relax because we could not use a harness whilst she was on the swing as it would be seen and she had to be at least five or six feet in the air for the shot to look right, this nervousness was quite obviouse when we watched what was being filmed on the TV that the camera was linked up to, even with someone holding the bottom of the rope so she would not swing about as much (Photo 2). I did most of the directing and filming in the group and the others would watch the TV moniter and tell me is my directions were working, this gave us better shots as what looks good from my point of view may not look so good on screen.
Although Holly was higher than the other band members (Photo 3) we didnt want her to seem like she had much higher status in the band, we just wanted to give her the slightly dominant position of the lead singer there fore she was the main focus in most of the shots, yet we tried to avoid shooting her from a high angle. To do this we could have raised the Tripod, but that would have been awkward to film on, or we could have lowered her but this would not have been as effective as we really wanted to convey the feeling that she was swinging on a rope high off the ground. With these two options out, we decided to use the 'genie' a small lift that fit just two people and a camera at best, but with two people it becomes cramped and movement is restricted so only one person would be in there at one time. Holly was also much more relaxed in these shots because if she did fall, she could just grab onto the cage of the genie. before we introduced the Genie, (Photo 1) we kept getting the ladder that Holly was standing on in the shots, we almost reverted back to her sitting on the swing without support. However, with the genie we were filming at a much less awkward angle so movement wise, we were not resticted by lack of reach and could adjust the shots to cut out the ladder.
I think that we worked really well as a team; I had most knowledge of the camera and as I direct mainly in theatre, I also took a main role in directing, But Daisy and Joe were better than me at seeing if the shots worked spacially on screen. Mikey had lots of good ideas about which members of the band to focus on the most, and he was also good at going off to find extra emergency cast member's whilst I continued shooting with the band and Daisy and Joe set up a make-shift dressing room and filled in the new cast as to what they were meant to do.

Account of the shoot day
How The shoot day was meant to run:
Night before: Set up the minimalistic black set with Holly's rope swing.
Morning: Shoot the band (Holly, Will and Otto)
Lunch Time: Set up lighting and set in the woods
Afternoon: Go down to the woods with the rest of the cast and shoot the wood's scene
BUT!...
The night before it rained! The reason we could not set up the woods scene the night before was incase it rained, hence why we would do it on the day.
However, the ground was far to wet so we just could not set up of shoot down there.
Luckily the night before i had gone to dress the set with this in mind so instead of making the set minimalistic, we raided the set and probs storgae room and designed a sort of scrap heap with tiers, chains and fake sheets of corrogated iron that was left over one of last years thrillers, just incase we didnt get a chance to rescedule the woods scene.
We went ahead with the preformance shots which went really well (described in more detail bellow) but by this point, we had told our wooods cast that the shoot was off and we were going to rescedule.
We finished the majority of preformance by 1pm and just as a precaution decided to improvise a woods scene in the studio incease we didnt get to shoot outside.
Mikey then went on a mad scramble around the school dragging anyone in free period to the studio, Kindly Jason, a media teacher, let us have his class which pretty much saved the day! Daisy and Joe then set up a make-shift dressing room and started to dress the new found cast, filling them in on the basic storyline- bearing in mind that at this point, not even we really knew what we were doing. Baisicly, we told them to be 'creepy' and 'demonic'. For such little infomation i think that the cast worked really really well.
Meanwhile I finished up the last of the preformance shots to release our DJ and basist and talked to matt and luke about what sorts of things we could film with this lastminute.com cast.
We improvised a scene where the animal people stood in a circle, I stood in the middle with Luke holding the camera (hand held to get a shaky shot) and stayed behind him as he spun around experimenting with shooting high angle and low angle either holding the camera above them of kneeling, even lying, on the floor- shooting from Abby's (The victimised 'innocent') perspective. After Luke had demonstrated this I suggested we did the same shot but with Abby in the middle. I shot alone this time shouting directions as I filmed. Every time I stopped on a characters face they would lunge at me, when I got onto the floor I shouted for them to begin climbing over the camera. In the Shots with Abby in the circle I would come in and out of the group shooting from the perspective of one of the animal people.
We then had the idea to incorporate Holly into the shots again. Holly and I got inside the genie lift and it was raised to about 15-20 feet. Holly then lay on her bak with her head overhanging the edge. She held the rope that she had previously been swinging on and i stood over her shooting down wards so it looked like the camera was above her whilst the climber up the rope. We did one shot of this with her singing the track then repeated the shot but with Abby in the circle of animal people on the floor below.
Just before we let everyone go, we shot all of the animal people tangled on the ground with one standing up in the middle in a flexible back-bend. Although this shot followed no real logic narrative wise, it provided a good opportunity for screen- grabs to be used in our DigiPack.

The Story Board Animatic
Originally we were going to have a club scene cross-cut with the 'woods' scene, but since then we have decided to have a performance element instead of the club.
So all of the club scene featured in this storyboard animation will be replaced with performance shots.
Our performance shots are going to be of a girl (the lead singer) swinging upside down on a rope whilst singing, with a drummer, basis and guitarist behind her.
We will have a slight red/blue tint to the woods scene to match the red/blue lighting of the stage.

What is our artists brand image?
The Clothes:
Patent leather boots
Studs and Chains
Tribal Tattoo's
Doc Martins
We want to create a band that have a typical rock-punk image. A typical Teen band with added Studs and Chains!
The Stage:
This is 'Prodigy' preforming live. The flashing lighting helps to create a manic atmosphere
This is 'Pendulum', a similar band to the band we wantto create
This is also 'Pendulum'. Through lighting we want to create a manic, fast pace scene that is just as demonic as the Woods scene but faster.

Bass- Will Bodnar-Hovarth (Middle Bottom)
Drums- Otto West (Middle Top)

We chose a blonde girl- Abbi- for our 'Girl in t he woods' because we will have the suggestion of innocence going into darker experience4 from the blond hair Vs how we dress her (in a tight, 'rock chick' outfit)
The lead singer has drak hair to match the darker, rock side of the song. The band are typical teenage boys who can be dressed to match the genre and look of the video

How The Video will Appeal To Our Target Audience
Who's going to be watching our video?
The target audience for the song 'Worrior's Dance' an the band 'Prodigy' is 16-25 year old, predominantly male.
So what have we done to make sure they will enjoy our video?
In our video we are having a mixture of preformance and narrative. In the narrative, we are going to have a blond girl, in high heels and a tight dress to appeal to the male gaze. In the wood we are going to show a demonic party, with people in the party are going to be half animal half human. This is not particulary gendre based because although the target audience is predominantly male, its only by a small margin, so the video has to apeal to girls as well.
The lead singer is going to be a girl. Whe is going to have more of a punk rocker look. the band are going to be 4 boys. The set will have fire, lighting effects and smoke to make it look nightmarish.
We have main these choices to apeal to the widest possible audience of both male and female.
because the song is fairly 'abstract' (it is baisicly layers of different sounds, beats and noise, rather than a guitarist and one set of vocals for instance) so the video needs to be abstract.
The Lead Singer
The Girl In The Woods
The Origional Band (Prodigy)
This is a band we found. We are going to base the look of our band around their look.

The Girl In The WoodsWho Is A Typical Member Of Our Target Audience?
Teenage Boys. The Concerts are loud, noisy and genrally a little anarchic, therefore our video must represent somthing chaotic, demonic and anarchic. this is why we have chosen the woods. It is a place where everyone has access to. The way we have decorated it turns it into some sort of anarchic party. When you think of a Prodigy Fan images of teenage boys running about with alcohol and drugs spring to mind, so our video relefcts this. It is 'trippy', nightmareish but keeping with the idea of a party.

Analysis of Video Narrative
Using methods of breaking down a music video's narrative that I learnt from studying Keith Negus, Richard Dyer and Vladimir Propp, I analysed Beyonce's 'If I Were A Boy'
Recap of what the diffrent theorists say:
Negus: Organic and Synthetic Act's- what talents or aspects of the artist are relayed in the Video (e.g and Organic act will mostly show the act or band playing their own instruments or singing, where as a the video of a synthetic act will mainly focuse on their sexual apeal or 'look' and dancing)
Dyer: Star Image- what kind of person does the act come across as in the video, (e.g The Kooks look like care free, nice guys in their video where as Britany Spears is shown as very sexy and confident in her video's)
Propp- The narrative - after studying stories, particulary folk stories, recognised that in almost all stories there is:
- Equilibrium
-Disruption
-Disequilibrium
-Resolution
-New Equilibrium
He also realised that nearly all stories have four main characters characters:
-Villian
-Hero
-Princess (who gets saved)
-Helper
Using these ideas, I analysed the video.
Negus:
Beyonce apears sexy in the video, but no overtly. Although the video is purley narrative, our main focus is her acting and singing rather than her sexual appeal.
In this video Beyonce is shown as a Organic act. the video does not have any of the 'gimmicks' (lighting effects, over-sexualised costumes e.t.c) often featured in the video of Synthetic acts, because these 'gimmicks' will attract a large audience for a short amount of time (untill the novelty wears off)
Dyer:
In the first part of the song, Beyonce seems like a strong woman, independant and strong, not only because of job (policewoman) but how she acts towards her boyfriend - she's not needy towards him. however, in the second half, when we realise that the story has been flipped, that its the man that is the police man and Beynce who in more in love with him, she seems much more feminine and vunrable. The audience is invited to sympathise for her because the video is from her point of veiw.
The Video is in Black and White offering a sophisticated look which forces the audience to take the video more seriousley, it also matched the subject of the song- a man who doesnt care about his woman.
Propp:
Equlibrium: is Beyonce in a strong Job, with the most powerful position in the relationship beacue he cares more about her than she does about him. He is trying to please her (makes her breakfast but she doesnt have time to eat it)
Disruption: Beyonce is danceing with the other policeman. Is she cheating? then we see that it is the other way around, that its the man who is in the police force, possibly cheating on Beyonce
Disseqilibrium: .We realise that the story is actually the other way around, the Beyonce is the one in love with the man and its the man who cares less about her
Resolution:We see the same video, but the other way around, with Beyonce trying to please the man
New Equilibrium: We see man getting into police car with another woman and a close up of Beyonce in black and white singing. She looks upset.

Codes and Conventions of a Genre
Our Gener: 'Warrios Dance' is typical club/dance song.
Here is some examples of what normally features in this sort of video:
Take me to the Hosiptal- Prodigy
The shorts are shots and out of focus. The visual effect of this reflects well the audio effects of 'unclean' noise- the voices are over-layed, slightly out of time with eachother. there is a lot of different sounds going on at once, giving a sense of manic confusion.
In the moments of 'relief' Where the music channels one set of vocals and the 'background noise' is turned down in the mix, giving a quieter, calmer sounds, the hsots are slightly longer, so the visual and audio have the same effects.

This next one is Pendulums 'Watercolour'
The video is part preformance and part abstract narrative which is what ours will be.
the fast cuts and jotly hand held camera gives off the manic effect the we are looking for.
Where our ideas came from
Shakespears A Midsummers night's dream
Smirnoff Vodka Woods Party Advert
Kante West- 'Power'
I really liked the costume in this. We could feature characters like these in our video. Half human half mystical creature.
The characters sort of remind me of the magical creatures in Greek mythology.
THE VIDEO
We origionally had a few ideas, on of which was a dream like, fairy girl in an urban setting. another was of a party in a club.
after thinking over these ideas we combined them to come up with a sorty of unreality set in a woods where a girl who is origionally seen in a club, passes out and ends up in this weird world. a little like Shakespears 'A Midsummers Night's Dream'
The characters in the woods will be having some sort of pagan-ritual like demonic party. We have considered religiouse/ritual suggestions such as someone tied to a tree like christ or a sacfirice.
We want to have not only the dream like feel but something of a demonic uncontrolled horror from the 'normal girls' point of view.
We were going to have club shots cut with shots in the wood but instead decided to have a preformance aspect for the video. this will also be easier because many people would be needed to be in the club scene.
the preformance will be one girl and two boys, the girl is the singer, she will be possibly swinging on a rope. there will be fire and UV lightling, the stange will be dark
because we are doing this instead of the club scene, it will take less time and it is easy to shoot in the studio and theres only four or five people to organise!

Short List Track
There was quite a lot of debate over what track we should chose due to two or three ideas that were on the table. Once we had chosen our idea we decided on Worriors Dance by Prodigy. Our Idea is of a nightmarish, demonic party based in a woods. The Worriors Dance is mainly instrumental and we will editit it down to shorten the track and cut out some of the vocals.
We created a list of key words that will help us on the shoot day to creat the look that we want
- Exitement
- Sex
- Passion
- Nightmare
- Illusion
- Fire
- Danger
- Drugs
- Tripping
- Music
- Festival
- Pagan Ritual
- Insanity
- Unreality
- Demonic Ritual
- Lust

Audience FeedBack- 1950's BoyBand
The 1950's Boyband idea was to have a shot of some old men, they turn on a radio and as the song 'What Makes You Beautiful' by One Direction, comes on, we see flash backs of them as teenagers. It will be shot in black and white, and show them preforming, getting chased by fans and 'Chilling out' after a show.
When this idea was presented, our sudience liked this idea of flash back but worried that it would be a little pradictable. another problem that we face is that there was a very similar music video created by students last year.
Other problems would be the old men, Either we employed actors or used prostetic face masks to age the youger boys (because we wanted the young band to be recognisable ad the older men in the past)
But the prostetics coulkd be really expensive, and if we got cheeo ones, they could end up looking really bad. So they we had to ask our selves, will the old men be a joke? or will we want to show them in a seriouse light?

Music Video Ideas
These are two of the ideas I have come up with, both need further development but as a group, we have all brought ideas to the table, including these two, and once we have all decided on the one that we are going to make, we will develop the idea further to make it more of a goup effort. Also, by everyone putting in different ideas that they have taken from personal experince (e.g. watching other music videos, ideas that they have come up with from seeing something as simple as a day in London) The quality of ideas in the music video will be expanded in a way that no body could do on thier own. By having a group of people creating a video together, you are able to see the project from a slightly more detatched view, therefore if theres a part that just wont work, no one has become 'attached' to it, so we will be able to regonise these moment and correct them from a much more profesional point of view.
To come up with the mise en scene, costume and settings that would appeal to my target audience, I used Richard Dyers theroies of star image. I knew what the taregt audience would be from the genre of music and basic idea of the video and created the characters and their style to apeal to said audience.
Audience Feedback- Soko
When I presented this idea to the class they thought it was more origionall than the Dubstep idea but didnt feel that it convayed any message. The DubStep idea stands for the phrase 'Drop Beats Not Bombs' because the fight is won by music rather than physical violence. Although the group liked the idea they felt it was a little underdeveloped and that i should re-pitch it once I had made some test animations.
One person suggested that the singer (the video is a mix of performance and narrative) could be holind a photo of the two characters and drawing the animations onto the picture that appear around the characters.
I really liked this idea but aminations in general take a long time to produce, therefore less time may be spent on the actually video so it could suffer as far a qualitly of editing is concerned.

She could be holding a pen and drawing on a photo of the couple on the ground.

Audiuence Feed Back- Bass Cannon
We each took turns to pitch our music video ideas to the class.
90% of the class preffered the DubStep - Bass Cannon- idea to the other video.
As the class are the average age for my target audience for this video it proved to me that I was definatley aiming for the right age group which was very helpful.
One of the points that they really liked is when the music goes from being Non-Diagetic (before the fight) to Diagetic (when the 'Chilled' group turn on the Boom Box. When I decided this I didnt take the idea into much considerationm it just seemed like the natural thing to do, but now, after the audience feedback session, I will definatley go with that idea iin the Video, and try to put in that detail of diagetic/non-diagetic music into other point in the video.
One of the Main concernes was if the video would be 100% narrative or if there would be some performance shots, if so what would they be? because the Music it synthetic (there are no real-life guitars or singers) the preformance shots could be of someone creating the music on a computer.
SIMS realitly Game
To show this on the screen, i have taken an idea from a music video made by some students at my school Last year: We Are Rockstars

This lead me to the idea that someone could be creating the music on a computer whilst playing a reality game (like SIMS) where they are controlling the fight in the gaming world, and its actually happening on the street outside.

I would take the idea of a projected screen to show the gamers movements.

Edditing the Shoot
When editing we chose a mix of fast pace, and slightly longer shots to go in time with the music, we switched between following the beat of the drum, guitar or bass. we collaborated with the group with the section of the song after us (we shot the first section) so that our last shot didnt clash or wasnt the same and their first shot.
In a team we all worked realyl well together, everyone put forward suggestions, no body fell into the background and nobody dominated the shoot. When someone was directiong, they took charge of the shoot but fell back when they were on playback or on camara. My favorite role was director but that's only because I'm interested in directing as a career but we all rotated pretty evenly.
I was really happy with the overall result, We all editted together and I think we were all pretty happy with the piece in the end. it was fairly easy to edit and only took us a few hours in the morning of the shoot day. When the sections were put together as a whole, it all worked really well together and the breaks between sections weren't visible.

Account of Music Vidio Prelimimary Shoot
During the shoot day we had to work in a very shot space of time so we had to chose our best shots. we worked from the front of the band, shooting the drummer and basist last to be more efficiant. Our first shot was a simple wide shot of the band running through the whole of our section of the song. this meant that when editting, although we had specifice, detailed shot we also had a wide shot of the band to give a bit of realise from close ups. In our team of Five we had a Director, Camara man, Assistant Director, Assistant Camara and Play-back. we rotated these roles so everyone in the team got a chance to see what each Jod entailes.
The actually shoot day ran fairly smoothly, our main problem we lack of time- we had only 25 minutes to do all of our shote- a 35 second section of the song.
The studio was a really good place to shoot in because there was no radicle change in lighting (we used a simplelow lit- fill light, lit from over head) so when we put all of the sections together it was hard to tell when one group ended and the other began. we had a simple set of tin sheets and wire, looking a little post war- it went with their grungy, pop-punk genre, but genrally kept the set low-key and didnt draw too much attention to it in the edditing and shot types, focusing on the band as it was a preformance vidio, and to match the moody, darker image of the band. We shot a wide shot of the band, palying the whole song then shots of each band member playing thruoght the whole some at variouse angles, this way we could cut to each indevidual musician in the fast cuts, for example if there way a drum solo we could cut to the drummer but had a variety of shots to chosose from like a close up of the instrument from a high or low angle, a close up of the face or a two shot which included another band member out of focus, we also used focus pull to draw attention to the next instrument or, in the case of the bass, we focused on his hands then using focuse pull focsed on his other hand to draw attention to it.
The shoot day as a whole, not only for my group but I think for the entire class, went really well. The band were easy to direct and everyone had a pretty clear idea of what they were meant to be doing. The day was fun, a little pushed for time, but overall a sucsessfull day.
